'That's The Worst Way To Lose': Rod Brind'Amour On Stinging Loss To Lightning

The Carolina Hurricanes suffered a brutal loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning Tuesday night as they surrendered a last-minute goal after battling back to tie the game.

Andrei Svechnikov finally got the monkey off his back and Jordan Staal also tallied a goal, but it just wasn't enough to overcome Tampa.

After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour spoke with the media. Here's what he had to say:

On giving up the last minute, go-ahead goal:
That's the worst way to lose. You'd rather have not even come back because it's just a kick in the teeth there. But guys fought back. I didn't like our start. That first goal was just not good enough. It was too light around our net and just waving sticks around at a puck that was just sitting there. So gave them one, but we fought back, got ourselves in the game. The difference, power play goal. They just float one in and then get a bounce. That's really the difference in the game. Wasn't a lot going on for both teams tonight. Both teams were working hard, but we came up short.

On the third period: It was probably our best period. We at least had zone time. Didn't generate a ton of chances, but we weren't giving up much. So that was the key. We got one, got it back at least in a position where we could win the game, but obviously they made a nice play at the end and that was the difference.

On Jordan Staal's line: That's the tough part. They had a really good game and they were our best line and created the goals, it's just what happens. Their best players made plays. That was the difference.

On Andrei Svechnikov breaking his scoring slump: It was a lucky goal. Wasn't much of a shot, but it was the stuff before it. His line generated some zone time and some o-zone faceoffs and they won them. That's the way the sequence of events works when you're playing good, which they were. That line was solid tonight.

On moving forward: It's tough because tonight we played well enough to maybe get something out of it. That's been the story of the season for me. It's that when we've lost, we've played well enough to get something but we're getting nothing out of those games. Have to find a way when maybe we're not even playing our best to at least get something out of these games. That's what we haven't done all year.
