'That's The Guy We Need': Sebastian Aho, Seth Jarvis, Jalen Chatfield, Rod Brind'Amour On Overtime Win Over Penguins
The Carolina Hurricanes got back in the win column Sunday night with a 4-3 overtime win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Sebastian Aho led the way with three points and the game-winning goal for his 600th career point, Seth Jarvis had two himself and Jalen Chatfield also popped one in.
After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour along with Aho, Jarvis and Chatfield spoke with the media. Here's what they had to say:
Rod Brind'Amour
On Sebastian Aho's extended shift in overtime: He was having a great game. A lot of the time, you can just read the body language. He didn't want to come off. You can tell when a guy has had enough. He just wanted to keep going and I thought he was if not one of the best players out there, maybe the best player on the ice tonight. I'm happy he wanted to stay out.
On the sequence leading up to Jalen Chatfield's goal: There were a lot of nice rush plays tonight and Chatty was in a lot of them too. He had a really good game. It would have been a terrible way to end because he had a good game and just put one over the glass. Could have ended a little differently. I thought he was solid.
On the team sticking with it despite an early 2-0 hole: I give the guys a ton of credit especially because of the way things went the other night. We made a bad decision on the first goal and gave them an odd-man rush and then they made a good play on the second one. You have to tip your hat. That was a world class play by Karlsson. That pass. You're just like, 'Okay. You made a good play.' You have to move on. I thought after that we settled down and got to our game, especially in the second period. I thought again they made a really nice play for a goal but I thought we just stuck with it. I think we got what we deserved tonight.
On the penalty kill at the end of regulation: Great penalty killing tonight. [Jarvis] was great tonight. All over it. That line was good. They play well together. It was a good win for us. We needed that one.
On Juha Jaaska stepping in and the fourth line's overall impact: That says a lot about that kid because he played last night in Chicago and then gets on a plane today. And he was impactful. He did a good job. That line... Blaker made some real nice plays tonight. He's not been rewarded really for some of the games he played but he's been around it. I think it's just a matter of time.
On William Carrier: I thought he was iffy for today. So we'll probably know more maybe tomorrow. I don't know. Hopefully it's nothing serious.
On Sebastian Aho's pass on Chatfield's goal: That was the play of the game for us. It could have went the other way and then we come down and yeah, he made a high-end play. Happy that Chatty shot it. He's had a couple of those this year where he dishes it off and tries to hit a guy and he had a guy coming to his right, but he ripped it in net. That was a great goal. A good hockey goal.
On Andrei Svechnikov elevating his game: Good pass and just tenacious tonight. I give him credit for that. I mean, he was on it. Trying to create loose pucks, which he did, heavy on the forecheck. And got the turnover and made a heck of a pass. Obviously it was a world class move and quick hands by Jarvy, but Svech had to set it up.
On Sebastian Aho: The last little while here, he's been very noticeable. There was a stretch there where you were just like, 'Eh.' He'd been okay, but not necessarily impactful. You really notice him lately. Even when he's not scoring or not on the scoresheet, he's been around it. That's the guy we need and you generally see.
Sebastian Aho
On if it was his intention to stay on the ice as long as he could in overtime: Nah, it's all kind of how it goes and obviously it's a lot easier when you have the puck. You feel like you're not tired when you have the puck. When you're chasing it, it's harder. I don't know. I don't think about how long I've been out there. Every situation is different and whenever it's time to change, it's time to change. This time luckily it ended in our win.
On battling back from an early deficit: Even though we were down two, I think we played better right from the start. That's hockey sometimes. They had a rush chance and put the puck in and then there one good o-zone shift and all of a sudden it's 2-0. I felt like up till that point, we had a good game. We kind of just kept moving forward and pushed through that. Great comeback.
On the team: I thought up and down the lineup we did a pretty solid job.
On Seth Jarvis: He skated well. Obviously a couple of nice finishes as well. Thought he had a really good game.
On Andrei Svechnikov's assist: Really nice play. That was a huge play and got us the lead in the hockey game too. It was nice to see him on the scoresheet.
On if this game can help to get them on a roll: Yeah, but we've been lacking that a little. We've had some good games and then the next game might be totally different. I mean, there's going to be wins and losses in this league, but it has to look the right way. Hopefully it's something we can build off of.
On what will be the biggest key to stringing together wins: Starting on time and playing our game. I know it's cliche, but that's literally what it is.
Seth Jarvis
On shaving his mustache: I decided it was time for a change and it worked.
On battling back after a tough start: It was good. We found our game after the start. Really, I don't think we were off it. A couple of tough bounces, but that's going to happen and I liked how we stuck with it. Nobody really got flustered and it always felt like we were going to get back into the game and have a chance. We waited for our opportunities and we made the most of them.
On if his first goal felt like a huge lifted weight: Yeah, oh my god. Last night I probably should have had two or three. I didn't really sleep last night. I was just so upset with myself so just to get one felt really nice and then to be able to capitalize again felt really good for me. It was good for my confidence and just to be able to know I can score at some point. It was nice to see them go in.
On Andrei Svechnikov's assist on his second goal: Made a great play. He's been all over it. He's using his body really well, creating havoc on the forecheck and making it tough for them to bring up the puck. It's only a matter of time before he starts scoring again but we have all the confidence in the world. When he's doing everything else right, it's going to come eventually.
On if a win like this can get the team rolling: I hope so. I mean we were trying to get on a roll after that Florida game and we saw what happened. It's not thinking about getting on a roll, it's just taking it one game at a time and not getting ahead of ourselves because we know how valuable each game is. So it's about not looking ahead or plan a winning streak, but just taking it each day and each game.
On the penalty kill: Gleas calls it 'Give an F.' I'm not going to say it, but you can imagine what that means. It just means caring a little more than them and outworking them and that's what most of my game is based off of. And I know how it feels on the other side when a PK is all over you and forechecking you, it makes it hard to get out of your zone. So to do that to them was big for momentum, especially in the second when me and Fishy started to get rolling a little bit. It was nice to see and just always good to make it tough on power plays, especially that one.
Jalen Chatfield
On the sequence before his goal: I don't even remember what happened. I just tried to get back and play defense first and when I can jump up, jump up.
On Sebastian Aho's pass to him: That was unreal. Just an unbelievable pass. I don't know of many guys that can make that and right on the money too. Right on my tape and all I had to do was get it on net. That was an unbelievable pass and I told him a few times, 'Good look.' I don't even know how he saw me. He did the little look. Just a great play.
On his goal celly: Blaker's been on me because I haven't really cellied much this year, so I tried. Have to keep working on it. I'm going to keep cellying.
On if it was a bow and arrow: Trying. I don't know. I kind of blacked out. I don't even remember what I was trying to do. Jags [Burns] liked it. The boys are giving me... they're talking about it way too much in between periods. So I don't know if I'm going to celly anymore, but it was fun.
On Sebastian Aho leading the way: It starts from the top and it has to work its way through the whole team. But when you have leaders like that, playing as good as they are, it's easy to follow behind, play with them and compete with them because that's what it's all about.
