TFC ticket fiasco leaves fans angry, re-sale market booming
It took record time – three minutes to be exact – for tickets to the MLS Cup to sellout. It’s understandable then that the game between Toronto FC and Seattle Sounders is a hot ticket.
The process to obtain these highly sought after ducats have left some long-time TFC fans seeing red.
First, there was the Major League Soccer grabbing a slew of tickets for corporate sponsors, the Sounders, and other MLS teams to use. Many of those tickets were in prime locations, meaning some TFC ticket holders were displaced from their regular seats.
Throngs of Toronto FC fans white-knuckled their computers Monday morning with the understanding Major League Soccer would release thousands of tickets ahead of the league’s marquee game.
Around 9,000 seats went on sale at noon and were snatched up in a matter of seconds. This after around 20,000 seats were purchased by existing season seat holders during an exclusive pre-sale event over the weekend.
Additionally, around 5,000 seats were allocated to the league, which has an obligation to provide tickets for sponsors, rights holders and fellow MLS clubs. At least 1,500 tickets were allocated to visiting supporters from Seattle.
Now, adding insult to injury, many of those seats have appeared on ticket re-sale sites going for quadruple the price. Understandably, many fans are upset.
On StubHub, there were 388 tickets up for grabs on Tuesday morning ranging in price from $310 to $4,445. The face value for those same tickets are in the $55 to $555 range. In comparison, the top season ticket package for the 2017 TFC season – which includes 17 regular season home games – is $1,625.

According to the Sun, MLSE – TFC’s ownership group – is advising fans to continue checking the team’s site as tickets may be released as they become available.
