Barcelona received yet another injury blow against Villarreal as Marc-Andre ter Stegen picked up a nasty knock to his right knee.

The injury occurred right after he tried to backpedal his way through a corner and fell awkwardly. He was immediately taken off on a stretcher, with the goalkeeper failing to hold back tears.

From the naked eye, ter Stegen’s blow to his right knee, which has been a pain point in the past, did not look all too positive.

Ter Stegen out for the season

Now, a report from Diario AS has offered an important update on the fitness of the goalkeeper.

As per the report, ter Stegen’s season could be over following his nasty injury against Villarreal.

Initial assessments of the goalkeeper’s injury were extremely negative and he was immediately taken to the hospital.

If the worst-case scenario is confirmed, ter Stegen could face up to seven to nine months through injury, which could serve as a major blow for Barcelona.

Ter Stegen’s injury further compounds Barcelona’s injury problems, with the German becoming the eighth addition to the elongated injury list.

Barcelona, therefore, may have no option but to continue with Inaki Pena as the main man between the sticks. Once the January transfer window opens, the club will have to make an important decision on whether or not they should sign a goalkeeper to replace ter Stegen.
