Erik ten Hag believes Manchester United will have to make more signings in the summer transfer window as next season will be the ‘survival of the fittest’.

The Red Devils suffered numerous injuries to key players across last season, affecting their performance on the pitch as they finished eighth in the Premier League.

The club have already sought to improve that situation by recruiting two members of Arsenal’s backroom team in Gary O’Driscoll as head of sports medicine and Jordan Reece as head physio.

Man United have also signed defender Lenny Yoro and attacker Joshua Zirkzee for almost £90m to improve their squad. However, Ten Hag says that additional arrivals are needed ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

“I want the squad as strong as possible. We already made two very good buys so when everyone is fit we have a team that can beat everyone.

“But with squad depth we need to catch up because we had injuries. This season will be survival of the fittest,” Ten Hag told reporters.

“We proved we can beat the best team. Not just once, we did it twice. But also the other games were also very close. Our challenge is to do it consistently, that’s what we have to work for.”

Ten Hag has also backed Marcus Rashford and Mason Mount to bounce back from setbacks following the disappointment of last season.

“Rashford can only improve himself,” said Ten Hag. “He is capable, he has scored so many goals, and at a relatively young age, so he is capable of it.

“I’m confident and have 100 percent belief he can do the same as he did two years ago.”

He continued: “I don’t judge Mason because he was injured, but when he is fit he will be a very good player. You need certain types in a squad. He can play in different positions and I’m sure he will help the team.”
