Aston Villa manager Robert de Pauw says that taking points from the big games is the next step for his side.

The Villans travel to the Leigh Sports Village to face Manchester United in their latest Barclays Women’s Super League fixture this evening.

Aston Villa have lost games against Chelsea and Manchester City by the odd goal and manager De Pauw says that his side now need to get points from their decent performances.

“It’s not easy,” De Pauw said when speaking in the pre-match pressn conference. “At the start of the season, we have already had [Manchester] City away, Chelsea away and now we get [Manchester] United away. I also think we’ve got Arsenal away, so that’s all of the top four in away games.

“What I take away from it is that we are competitive and we can put some fear in the opponent. We can’t bring the game to a [successful] end at the moment, so we have to be honest about ourselves but that’s the next step that we have got to take, to get something from the game. We don’t want to just rattle the cage, we want to bring the points home, that’s what we are aiming for.”

It has been a winless start to the season for Aston Villa. The team have generally performed quite well but De Pauw says that the focus has to be on winning.

He said “We are frustrated because we want to win. It’s a performance-related game but it’s not only about playing well, it’s also about winning. The focus has to be on that part but we are also focused on how we want to win. The second part is not bad. We have had a lot of entries into the final third and put in a lot of crosses as well and the data shows that we are at the top of the league with that. This is nice but you have to get something from it.”

A trip to the Leigh Sports Village is never easy but De Pauw says that a win would give his side a real boost.

He said “Winning the game would be a big boost for us and drive confidence. It should show us that we are on the right track and we have to keep pushing forward.”

Aston Villa’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture at Manchester United kicks-off at 6.45pm.
