Takeaways from Missouri Tigers’ Battle Line Rivalry football victory over Arkansas
The Missouri Tigers beat the Arkansas Razorbacks 28-21 in the regular-season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon at snowy Faurot Field at Memorial Stadium in Columbia.
With the win MU claimed the Battle Line Rivalry Trophy that’s awarded annually to the winner of this showdown between college football programs whose home states share a border.
Mizzou improved to 9-3 (5-3 Southeastern Conference) while Arkansas finishes the regular season 6-6 (3-5 SEC).
On Senior Day in Columbia, MU running back Marcus Carroll scored the opening touchdown of the game late in the first quarter.
A senior, he’d later score the Tigers’ second touchdown and finish with 90 yards on 22 carries. Carroll even made a snow angel on the field in celebration of his first TD (he struck a crossed-arms pose after his second).
Arkansas running back Ja’Quinden Jackson, meanwhile, scored twice through the first three quarters and three times in all.
But in the end, senior Tigers quarterback Brady Cook, playing in his final game at Faurot Field, was the one who secured this victory. His 30-yard touchdown run put it on ice with less than 2 minutes remaining.

Earlier in the game, another pretty important moment occurred with 2 minutes, 50 seconds left in the third quarter. The Tigers were trailing 14-10 at the time and Jackson, the Hogs running back, was involved.
Mizzou defensive end Johnny Walker Jr. and linebacker Triston Newson combined to pop the football from Jackson’s grasp at the line of scrimmage. Linebacker Corey Flagg Jr. was alert and smothered it for a much-needed MU takeaway.
The Bobby Petrino-coached Razorbacks fumbled three times in the snowy conditions, losing possession of the ball twice.
Another seemingly pivotal turn of events arrived with just under 11 minutes to play. It hadn’t been an ideal day for passing the ball because of the weather, but that didn’t stop Cook from finding receiver Theo Wease Jr. for a gain of 70 yards.
That explosive sequence brought the Tigers into the red zone, where they tacked on a field goal. Blake Craig hit his second of the day at the 9:39 mark and Mizzou led 20-14.
Cook, the senior from St. Louis, finished 10 of 20 through the air for 168 yards with no passing TDs or interceptions. He also carried it 11 times for 63 yards, nearly half of that coming on his winning TD sprint.
Arkansas QB Taylen Green, meanwhile, was 21 of 34 for 229 yards, no TDs and no picks. Before Cook’s TD, Green had conjured some late-game magic of his own, finding receiver Andrew Armstrong on fourth and 8 to get the Razorbacks to MU’s 15-yard line.
Jackson powered in for his third and final touchdown of the afternoon two plays later and the Hogs retook a 21-20 lead with 4:19 left (Jackson finished with 87 yards on 18 carries).
The visitors’ lead would melt away soon enough thanks to Cook’s decisive touchdown for MU.
Before the game’s mid-afternoon kickoff, stadium crews used leaf blowers and other means to clear as much snow from the playing surface as they could. Light snow continued to fall as play began but abated as they day progressed.
