Szczesny breaks his silence after red card during Super Cup final – ‘I made a bad decision’
Barcelona fans have little to complain about following the Spanish Super Cup final, as they humbled their arch-rivals Real Madri 5-2 on their way to lift the trophy.
But one negative moment on the night that did cause more tension than necessary was goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny’s sending-off.
The veteran goalkeeper’s ill-timed challenge in the second half, where he extended his leg more than necessary, and brought down Kylian Mbappe at the edge of the penalty area, earned him a red card after a VAR check.
Szczesny will now serve out his one-match suspension tomorrow in the Copa del Rey clash against Real Betis.
Szczesny speaks out on red card
Following the red card, Szczesny, who won his first trophy with Barcelona months after joining the club, has taken to social media to express his thoughts on the incident.
“Yes, I made a bad decision and was sent off in my first ever El Clasico!” Szczesny admitted. “Yes, it’s not a particularly nice feeling. But experience lets me see things from a different perspective,” he added, reflecting on his career at the highest level.
Commenting on the drastic change in his life, as he has gone from being retired to playing a Clasico final he shared:
“In September I was retired from football and I was enjoying my life on the beaches and golf courses of Marbella. 4 months later I got to play a game that before I could only watch in TV or play on FIFA.”
Szczesny does not shy away from admitting his mistakes, no matter how significant. In his statement, he revealed:
“And I was never going to hide and play this game afraid of making difficult decisions and taking risk. One might think that it is that attitude that caused my red card,” he said.
“I prefer to think that it’s precisely this attitude that led me to be where I am right now and it is thanks to my sometimes unreasonable courage that I now get to enjoy my first trophy as a Barcelona player!”
“Living your life without fear may sometimes get you hurt but believe me, you get an incredible adventure in return! I love this game! Visca el Barça,” he concluded.
The red card caused a brief spell of uncertainty as Barcelona conceded a goal from Rodrygo’s shot, bringing the score to 5-2. Fortunately for Flick’s side, it was only a fleeting scare as they held on to lift the first trophy of the season.
