Suspension Incoming For Ryan Reaves' Headshot On Oilers' Darnell Nurse

EDMONTON -- Danger, danger.

That must have been what was going through Darnell Nurse's mind in the split second he had before getting plowed over by Ryan Reaves.

After the massive hit to the head, the Edmonton Oilers defender did not return to the game, and the Toronto Maple Leafs enforcer received a match penalty. The Maple Leafs would eventually win the game 4-3 off Mitch Marner's 200th career goal.

The primary concern was the health of Nurse after he was seen bleeding in the aftermath of the collision. No one likes to see a player go down like that. The concern is increased when it's because of a huge head hit.

Now, according to Jack Michaels and Elliotte Friedman, Nurse was seen joking around with trainers and walking after the game. This is obviously a good sign, but doesn't lend itself to revealing the full nature of the defender's condition.

Reaves is not so lucky.

The Department of Player Safety published on X this morning, "Toronto's Ryan Reaves will have a hearing today for an illegal check to the head against Edmonton's Darnell Nurse."

The post doesn't specify whether this hearing is over the phone or in person. Because it doesn't specify, it's most likely a phone hearing, which implies a suspension of five games or less.

This is obviously a huge story to monitor as the day progresses. The Oilers have the day off today but play back-to-back games against the Montreal Canadiens and Ottawa Senators on Monday and Tuesday.
