Superman: Legacy receives release update from James Gunn

Despite months of WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Superman: Legacy won't be moving on its original release date, it has been confirmed.

The new boss of DC Studios, James Gunn, is behind the latest cinematic rebooting of Clark Kent and announced the fantastic news via Instagram this weekend.

He wrote to his 2.6 million followers: "Thanks to the efforts of our talented crew, who never lost faith during the longest strikes in Hollywood history, and who never let their foot off the pedal, continuing to barrel forward, creating the most amazing character and set designs I've seen in my entire career, #SupermanLegacy will be making the originally planned release date of July 11, 2025."

Gunn's red-caped blockbuster is one of the lucky ones, with many Hollywood productions getting pushed back by studios due to this year's unprecedented union strikes.

Deadpool 3, for instance, now sits on a July 26, 2024 release date – two months delayed from its previous spot on the calendar – while Captain America: Brave New World jumps from summer 2024 to February 14, 2025.

Starring David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as the new Superman and Lois Lane, Legacy will apparently not take the form of an origin story.

At a press conference back in January, executive producer Peter Safran teased: "It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice, and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old-fashioned."

Gunn added: "He's working. He's a reporter. He's at the Daily Planet. Again, we're coming into a world where superheroes exist and have existed. So, does that mean Batman might be a couple years older than Superman? Yes, it could be."

Superman: Legacy premieres in cinemas July 11, 2025.
