'We Stunk': Rod Brind'Amour, Martin Necas, Eric Robinson On Loss To Seattle

The Carolina Hurricanes played perhaps their worst game of the Rod Brind'Amour era, losing 4-2 to the Seattle Kraken Tuesday night at Lenovo Center.

The Canes had just 19 shots on goal through 60 minutes and had managed just seven through 40.

Despite that, goals by Eric Robinson and Martin Necas brought the team back in it before a controversial goaltender interference call took away the go-ahead goal for Carolina.

After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour along with Necas and Robinson spoke with the media. Here's what they had to say:

Rod Brind'Amour

On the goaltender interference call:
I mean, what do you say? I would love for it to go our way. The explanation was that sometimes they call it that way, sometimes they don't. He said they decided that there was enough contact on the goalie that he couldn't play his position. Doesn't matter that he's not in the paint. You always assume it kind of has to be in the paint, but... and they did say it's 50/50. They just thought that it was enough that he couldn't play his position so... We lose a lot of those.

On the game: Listen, I think the better point is what happened in the first two periods where we didn't get anything going. You start the game and you give up a goal right away. That's kind of unacceptable. We fought back a little bit, but you can't play two periods like that.

On if he was surprised by how quickly the review took: Just look at the history of the goalie interferences with this team. Just look at 'em.

On what the officials told him: He was really good about it. He came over and said, 'You remember one time last year you had one where the goalie's head was just outside the blue paint and even though there was contact, we called it a good goal because it wasn't enough.' I don't know. We all know this goalie interference thing is very subjective, I guess. We just always seem to end up on the wrong end of them. That's what's a little bit frustrating.

On Pyotr Kochetkov's play: He was good. He had to make some good saves, obviously. He was not our issue, that's for sure.

On what made it hard for the team to get to their game: I have no clue.

On the game: First of all, they played a good game. You have to give them credit. So let's not take that away. But we stunk. Our top guys have to come and that includes everybody. There's a lot of top players here that weren't good tonight and if we're going to win, we're going to need those guys being top guys. They have to look the part and it just hasn't been there.

On the lack of shot generation: There hasn't been a lot of those games, but we just couldn't get on the forecheck. They did a nice job of just chipping it and putting it back. We knew what was going on, but you have to be there. You have to be on top of it and when you're just a little off, that's what it looks like. Like I said, we weren't sharp.

On if getting things going is just a matter of switching up the lines: Well I've done that, so that's not the answer. I tried that over and over and over and that's just clearly not doing anything. We have to look in the mirror and just do your job. When you're out there, you have to do your job. We're going to turn the page, tomorrow we're going to go over it and whether you won three or lost three, it makes no difference going into that next game. You have to win that one. We'll come back tomorrow, get better. This stuff you have to forget about.

On the power play: We only had one power play and it was a pretty good one. Hit the post, won the draw, snapped it around, hit the post, came in, entry and in the net. That was about the only good thing we did all night. That was exactly how we draw it up. So I can't complain about that.

Martin Necas

On the disallowed goal:
I mean, it happens, but our overall game wasn't good. I don't even know how many shots we put on. Usually we outshoot teams and we're in their end basically the whole game. Didn't get in on the forecheck and it just wasn't good enough. It's hard. We've been chasing games in the beginning and we just have to be better at that.

On the second period: We never got to our game. It's hard when you're just turning pucks over. Don't really know what we were doing out there. We just have to stick together. There's going to be phases in the regular season where it's going to go up and down, but we're a good enough team and a great team in the locker room that we're going to turn this around. It starts tomorrow.

On if players understand goaltender interference: I actually don't know. I didn't really see it. I feel like it's 50/50 every time. I didn't see it so...

On moving on: Everybody has to look in the mirror and go out there the next game and do our best. It starts with the first shift of the game. If you're chasing the game every game, it's tough. We just have to get to our game. Got to dig in.

On how frustrating it's been: Yeah, but hopefully it goes now and not a few months after. We got to get to that next step. It's a tough league. You have tough games in this league. When you're down, you just have to forget about it and go out there the next day, have a good practice and build off that and be good the next game.

Eric Robinson

On how he felt about the goaltender interference call:
I haven't had a chance to watch it yet. I felt like I stayed outside of the crease, but yeah... I don't know. I haven't watched it.

On if the league attempts to educate players on what constitutes goaltender interference: It's hard. It's case by case. It's not easy.

On the three-game skid: I think we know we're in a bit of a funk with our play. We just have to get out of it as quick as possible.

On trying to take some positives from the loss: I don't think we played good enough. I think we have a good stretch here of home games this month that is a great opportunity for us to come together and get back to our winning ways.

On the start: They scored pretty quick, so it was definitely not the start we wanted. I don't think we got to our game enough. I think we had seven shots through two periods, so just not enough. That's not our game.

On how frustrating the disallowed goal was: It's frustrating. Any of them. Offsides, goalie interference. When you score, it's deflating when they take it away.

On what the team can do differently in practice to stop the slow starts: I think we're practicing fine and everyone's working hard, everyone wants to win. Like I said, just coming together as a group and maybe simplifying things and just getting back to our game.
