‘Stubborn’ moose freed from canal, then refuses to move. See how rescuers improvised

Wildlife officials spent hours working with a canal company to rescue a moose trapped at the bottom of a concrete canal in Utah.

Stunning photos show the moose stuck inside a concrete triangle in South Weber, about 25 miles north of Salt Lake City.

Officials with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources didn’t divulge how the moose may have gotten herself in that position, but they had to remove two concrete blocks with a backhoe to free her, according to a June 27 Facebook post.

Before removing the concrete blocks, the canal company positioned a front-end loader in the canal to guide her out.

But the strategy didn’t quite work as planned, officials said.

After they removed the concrete blocks and she was no longer trapped, officials hoped the moose would use an escape ramp near the front-end loader to get out of the canal. A photo shows her standing still in the flowing canal water.

So the workers drove the backhoe past the moose, and then turned it back toward her, officials said.

That was enough to scare her up the escape ramp and out of the canal. Officials let her go off on her own.

“In other news today Miss Monica Moose reports her day at the spa (a gift from her kids) was totally ruined by road repair crews,” someone joked in the comments.

Another commenter also weighed in on the “stubborn” moose.

“This story is part of why I will never apply for a moose tag,” they said. “Fair chase doesn’t really apply to an animal so stubborn it will just stand there!”
