Three storylines for Chiefs-Chargers

The Chargers have (big-time) injury issues

The Chargers will be without left tackle Rashawn Slater and defensive end Joey Bosa due to injuries. And potentially even more important: quarterback Justin Herbert and right tackle Joe Alt are listed as questionable.

On top of that, safety Derwin James — one of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce’s greatest nemeses over the years — is out due to a suspension. The Star’s Jesse Newell writes in his prediction: it’s not an ideal position for the Chargers to be in against their top AFC West foe.

For the Chiefs, defensive end Mike Danna was a surprise addition to the injury report Thursday with a calf injury. Coach Andy Reid said Danna would miss this weekend’s matchup. The news could mean more playing time for 2023 first-round pick and KC-native Felix Anudike-Uzomah, who picked up his first career full sack last week against the Falcons.

Travis Kelce’s role in the offense

With eight receptions for 69 yards and no touchdowns through three games, Travis Kelce is off to the slowest start of his decorated NFL career.

Sunday’s game could be what changes that early trend. (He could “Shake It Off,” I suppose ... sorry.) Kelce has had 100-yard receiving performances in four of his past five games against the Chargers and turned in a three-touchdown game at SoFi Stadium in 2022.

The Star’s Blair Kerkoff asked Kelce about the “noise” around his slow start.

Patrick Mahomes breakout game?

Here’s the craziest part about KC’s start to the season: While everyone wonders what’s wrong with Patrick Mahomes and Kelce, the Chiefs have played three projected playoff teams, three potential conference championship contenders ... and they’re 3-0.

You think the Ravens (1-2) or Bengals (0-3) would trade for those problems?

That said, Mahomes did acknowledge he hasn’t been up to par so far this year. He has five touchdowns to four interceptions, including some ugly ones. Against the Ravens, he was solid, but it’s been a mixed bag ever since.

If Mahomes can trust his offensive line — and that group can hold up better, like it did against the Falcons — Sunday could be his breakout game.

More KC Chiefs coverage...

  • While battling his own anxiety, Chiefs linebacker Drue Tranquill wants to show others they’re not alone. Star columnist Vahe Gregorian spoke with Tranquill about his childhood experiences and how others can learn a valuable lesson from them.

  • There’s been lots of talk about the passing game in KC, but don’t let this go under the radar: The Chiefs are running more — and more successfully — than in years past.

  • That said ... there’s been a familiar issue for this KC team. What’s behind the Chiefs’ short-yardage issues? The Star’s Blair Kerkhoff tackled that very topic, for which Andy Reid took some responsibility.
