Three storylines for Chiefs-Broncos
An encore for DeAndre Hopkins?
Seriously, how good was DeAndre Hopkins last week? And how much did Patrick Mahomes have to trust him to lob up a deep ball into double (or triple) coverage, only to see the contested-catch virtuoso come away with a snag and eventual touchdown later that drive.
The man they call “D-Hop” — who broke out a familiar touchdown dance last week and also endeared himself to fans by sharing a special moment with his mother at Arrowhead — should only be getting better and better as he figures out the offense. That has to be scary for KC opponents, after he recorded two touchdowns in last week’s win.
And about the offense...
Let’s stick on the KC offense, especially going on year No. 2 of the defense being the unit to guide the team through the regular season. One thing the Chiefs are doing in 2024 is putting together long, methodical drives that result in scores, which Star columnist Sam McDowell uncovered goes all the way back to training camp.
That said, the Chiefs are also finding themselves falling behind quite often, and it’s something they’ll need to address before it catches up with them.
Taking care of business
If there were ever to be a lookahead spot for the 8-0 Chiefs, it would be this. The Broncos are 5-4 and hanging around the playoff picture, but the Chiefs know what looms on the other side of this game: a big-time test at the Buffalo Bills after which “undefeated season” conversations would become a legitimate talking point.
If the Chiefs approach Sunday’s game that way ... they could be on upset alert. It’s a cliche — and coaches love to say it — but the Chiefs have to take this game one at a time against a respectable opponent.
More Kansas City Chiefs coverage
The Chiefs have won 14 straight dating back to last season — eight this year, four in the playoffs and two to end the 2023 regular season. How do they keep doing it? Star columnist Vahe Gregorian explored that topic.
Typically, fans call it “Arrowhead.” But let’s talk about GEHA Field. If you’re in KC, you know the weather hasn’t been great. Add to that a KU football game played Saturday afternoon, and field conditions could be, well, interesting.
And finally, The Star’s Blair Kerkhoff has the keys to the game, including why George Karlaftis could be a player to watch in this matchup.
