Stars Blow Two Goal Lead, Lose 3-2 to Los Angeles Kings
After taking a 2-0 lead in a dominant first period, the Dallas Stars saw Los Angeles turn the game around and win 3-2 on a go-ahead third period goal by Warren Foegele.
The Stars were playing their second game of a three-game road trip out west and were riding a three-game win streak after defeating the Colorado Avalanche, the Winnipeg Jets and the Utah Hockey Club.
Before morning skate, General Manager Jim Nill announced that Tyler Seguin would be out 4-6 months due to hip surgery. He had the same surgery on his right side in 2020 and was finally getting back to his game after re-learning how to walk and navigating his new game with the limitations of hip surgery. So the lineup remained the same from the Utah game, with Logan Stankoven filling in on the line with Matt Duchene and Mason Marchment.

Going into the game, the Stars had won eight of the last 10 meetings between the two teams. From the jump, the Stars dominated the game. Less than a minute in, Adrian Kempe was called for tripping Roope Hintz. To open up the scoring, Jason Robertson made a perfect no-look one-touch pass to Wyatt Johnston in front of the net, and Johnston banged home his own rebound just before the power-play ended.
The Stars continued to apply pressure throughout the first period, and with about seven minutes to go, Mason Marchment shot the puck through three Kings players who screen their own goalie and made it 2-0. This was the first time Marchment has scored against the Kings in his career.
During the second period, the Kings started to push back. Los Angeles had four days off coming into Wednesday's game and it seemed like they finally shook that rust off. Less than five minutes into the period, Tanner Jeannot beat Jake Oettinger on a bounce off the back wall that landed awkwardly and caught Oettinger off guard. Later into the period, the Kings tied up the game on a long shot from the blue line that bounced off Miro Heiskanen's knee pad. Joel Edmundson was credited with the goal.
Going into the third period, Dallas was out-shooting the Kings 18-11 but Los Angeles had established their physical game. Though the Stars had suppressed the Kings offense, the game no longer felt as though the Stars were driving the play. The line of Quentin Byfield, Foegele and Jeannot led the way for the Kings and set the tone after getting pushed around in the first period.
A little over two minutes into the third period, Foegele put the Kings in the lead for the first time on a hard-working wrap-around goal. For the rest of the period, the Stars looked for some life to push themselves back in the game. A late period power-play gave them the opportunity needed, and to the Stars credit, they generated multiple high-danger chances including a shot from Sam Steel that nearly leaked behind David Rittich, but the puck luck was not on their side. Los Angeles shut down Dallas with their net empty, and the time withered away with the score finishing 3-2 Kings.
The Stars three-game win streak was snapped and although the game was frustrating in some manners, the Stars did not get out-played. Dallas has to have a short memory, though, because they take on the Vegas Golden Knights on Friday before heading home.
