Star who left Man Utd this summer could now retire after major development, set to terminate contract – report

Former Manchester United star Raphael Varane could announce his retirement from professional football in the coming hours as he nears the termination of his contract with Como, according to French outlet Le Parisien.

The former France international left the Red Devils as a free agent in the summer, joining the Serie A club, but he played just once for them before picking up a knee injury.

Varane has been ruled out for months as a result, and he is now considering hanging his boots, with an announcement expected any moment from now.

Injuries also limited the former Real Madrid star to live up to the expectations at Man United, and calling time on his career looks like the most reasonable thing to do.

The 31-year-old won it all with both club and country, leaving the Old Trafford club with Carabao Cup and FA Cup winners medals after three campaigns, having won four UEFA Champions League and three La Liga titles with the Spanish club.

Varane won the FIFA World Cup with France in 2018 and also reached the final in 2022, and he will go down in history as one of the finest centre-backs of all time.

He played 95 games for Man United, putting in some incredible performances before the intensity of the English top-flight started telling on him.

Varane was one of the highest-paid players at Old Trafford before leaving, pocketing £340,000-a-week, and the club opted against handing him a new deal following his frequent struggles with his fitness.

It has now culminated in his expected decision to retire, and he could now decide to move into coaching or punditry afterwards.
