Stanley Cup history
The Stanley Cup is the oldest trophy in competition by professional athletes in North America. The Cup was the idea of Lord Frederick Arthur Stanley, the Earl of Preston and the sixth governor general of Canada.
Lord Stanley donated the trophy in 1893 to award the top-ranking amateur club. The original Cup, first called the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, resides at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
In the Cup's early years, teams could challenge for it, sometimes leading to multiple challenges each year. The National Hockey League took control of the Cup in 1926 and gained the right to reject challenges from other leagues in 1947.
The modern look of the trophy was designed in 1947 by engraver Carl Petersen. Champions get their names engraved on a ring, which when full, is removed and a new one is inserted at the bottom. Retired rings are flattened and displayed at the Hockey Hall of Fame.
The next new ring will be added following the 2016-17 season.
