Stanley Cup champs host Winnipeg ball hockey game

Some lucky hockey fans got to suit up and play with two Stanley Cup champions on the roof of a downtown Winnipeg parkade Tuesday afternoon.

Dozens of fans converged on the roof of the parking structure at The Forks, including some children who got out of school a little early.

Winnipeg Jets captain Andrew Ladd and L.A. Kings centre Mike Richards hosted the ball hockey match, which began shortly after 4 p.m. CT.

Ladd and Richards are heading up their own teams, which are playing until one squad scores five points, the CBC's Alana Cole reported at 4:30 p.m.

The two NHLers tweeted about the game earlier in the day, encouraging the public to suit up and join them on the parkade roof.

Ladd, from Maple Ridge, B.C., won a Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006 then got another in 2010 with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Richards, from Kenora, Ont., won the Stanley Cup in June 11 with the Kings.

An official with The Forks told CBC News that staff would limit the number of people that could get on the parkade roof.

Ladd and fellow Winnipeg Jet Mark Stuart are helping to organize a charity hockey game, slated for Saturday, at the University of Manitoba's Max Bell Centre.
