The netminder was staring at the other end at Dallas Stars goalie Jake Oettinger, probably thinking to himself, "We could be doing this for our respective countries in February."
After the first period, it was evident the Blues were calling on their goalie to steal them two points.
Binnington did his absolute best, with 35 saves when the Blues were practically curb-stomped in most statistical categories; he was under siege throughout the night but finally broke when Matt Duchene's power move around Justin Faulk and rip far side beat the Blues 2-1 in overtime at American Airlines Center.
In his past four starts, Binnington had allowed three or more goals in each. But on Saturday, when the Blues had a paltry 16.6 percent deserved to win percentage according to moneypuck.com, it was all due to their goaltending.
The Blues (14-14-3) had a chance to pull within two points of the Stars (18-11-0) for third place in the Central Division but those not No. 50 apparently didn't get the memo.
One of Binnington's performances this season didn't exactly go by the wayside thanks to his own doing. Binnington's goals saved above expected was 2.46, but it sure seemed like more than that.
When the losing goalie is the No. 1 star in the visiting building even in a losing effort, you know someone was on top of his game and probably beyond.
"We lost, right, so it’s tough," Binnington said. "But we hung in there until the end, so that’s positive. We want that extra point for sure."
