Spanish U21 coach eyeing Real Madrid talent for upcoming squad selection
Raul Asencio’s rise at Real Madrid has certainly captured attention. His unexpected inclusion in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad came at the perfect time, with several key players sidelined due to injuries.
Since making an impressive debut against Osasuna, Asencio has firmly established himself as a regular member of the first team and a frequent starter.
Now, reports from Jorge Picon (h/t Rm4 Arab) suggest that his performances have caught the eye of Spain’s U21 coach, Santi Denia.
According to sources, Denia is seriously considering Asencio for the upcoming squad. The player’s development has been closely monitored by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).
Coaches and other officials are pleased with his progress and have started to think about his inclusion in future call-ups.
Denia, in particular, is excited about the possibility of adding Asencio to his squad. The U21 coach is already planning ahead for the March window and the European Championship next summer, which will take place in Slovakia.
Asencio’s ability to play both as a centre-back and as a full-back makes him a valuable asset to the team, particularly in strengthening the defence.
A great opportunity for the Real Madrid star
Denia is no stranger to Asencio, having previously called him up in 2022 when he was managing the U-19s.
Although Asencio did not debut at the time, he participated in training sessions, allowing Denia to assess his skill level firsthand. Now, three years later, the two may finally work together on a competitive stage.
While Asencio’s inclusion in the senior Spain squad is unlikely for now, given the strength of the current defensive options, coach Luis de la Fuente has kept an eye on the young talent.
Asencio’s performances in La Liga against top-tier forwards have proven his ability, but de la Fuente is currently loyal to his established defenders.
For now, Asencio’s focus must remain on earning consistent playing time at Real Madrid, as both the coaching staff and the club’s board have recognised his reliability and talent.
