Spain defender Marc Cucurella has expressed his desire to see Nico Williams join him at Chelsea during the upcoming transfer window.

Cucurella, who plays alongside Nico on the left wing for Spain at the Euros, showered praise on the Athletic Bilbao winger, highlighting his impressive display of talent during the tournament.

He said that the young winger is playing at his best and it would be great if he joins him at Chelsea.

“He is a great player, he is bringing out all his potential, it is a source of pride that he is on our team, that he is our teammate and with players like him everything is easier,” said Cucurella as quoted by SPORT.

“It would be a great signing, but it all depends on his opinion. I’m pushing him to sign for Chelsea. In the end, it all depends on him. He’s very young, with a lot of experience, and I think he’ll be a great player,” he added.

Barcelona have an agreement with Nico Williams

The pursuit of Nico by Barcelona has been widely acknowledged, but the club’s financial challenges have posed a significant obstacle in meeting his hefty €58 million release clause.

Athletic Bilbao have made it clear in the market that any potential suitor must be prepared to pay the full release clause amount upfront to secure Nico’s services.

Reports suggest that Barcelona had reached a verbal agreement with Nico and his agent approximately a month ago. However, at that time, the Catalan club was also considering alternative transfer targets.

Nico’s standout performances for Spain at the UEFA Euro 2024 have since prompted Barcelona to adjust their plans and prioritize his signing.

In addition to Barcelona’s interest, Chelsea have emerged as a strong contender in the race for Nico’s signature.

The London-based club is reportedly ready to trigger his release clause of €58 million and is willing to significantly increase his current salary, potentially tripling his wages.

Despite the competition from various clubs, Barcelona’s previously reported verbal agreement with Nico could provide them with a strategic advantage in negotiations.

This understanding suggests a mutual interest between the player and the club, potentially influencing Nico’s final decision.
