High school softball state championships have arrived. Here’s who is representing the Coast
The Coast has sent three teams to Hattiesburg to vie for a state title.
St. Patrick, Hancock and East Central all won South State championships this weekend and are heading to Southern Miss for the final series of the season.
Here is the weekend schedule and a brief breakdown of the matchups.
3A State Championship
St. Patrick vs Mantachie
Game 1, Wednesday May 15 at 10 a.m.
Game 2, Thursday May 16 at noon
Game 3 (if necessary), Friday at 11 a.m.
The Fighting Irish are a perfect 8-0 during the playoffs and are 30-game winners for the first time since 2013. They are led at the plate by Tara Nasakaitis and in the circle by Allee Bennett. St. Patrick will be tested by the dominant pitcher and Northeast Community College commit Ramsey Montgomery.
5A State Championship
East Central vs Corinth
Game 1, Wednesday May 15 at noon
Game 2, Friday May 17 at 1:15 p.m.
Game 3 (if necessary), Saturday May 18 at time to be determined
The Hornets are back in the state title series for the third time in the last four seasons in search of their first trophy since 2009. East Central has an electric ace in Breyona Tanner and a duo in Bree Phillips and Baleigh Tullos that have combined for 88 hits this year. They’re tasked with facing a team that has not lost in over a month.
6A State Championship
Hancock vs South Panola
Game 1, Tuesday May 14 at 4:30 p.m.
Game 2, Thursday May 16 at 2:25 p.m.
Game 3 (if necessary), Saturday May 18 at time to be determined
One of the most productive players in the state will play in the final round. Hancock’s Teegan DeWitt has struck out 35 batters in 19.2 innings pitched in the postseason. In that same span, she has 10 hits — half for extra bases — and six RBIs. South Panola boasts the 6A Miss Softball winner Sadie Bright, who enters the series with a 0.69 ERA.
