‘Sources say’ – Journalist claims Newcastle could move for 22y/o ace in 2025, player keen to join SJP

Newcastle United could be looking to sign a new goalkeeper either in the January transfer window or next summer. 

According to journalist Craig Hope of The Daily Mail, the Magpies could make a renewed attempt to sign Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford in 2025.

Newcastle were heavily linked with a move for the 22-year-old goalkeeper during the summer window, but the two sides couldn’t reach an agreement.

Hope writes that “sources say” the interest in Trafford from Newcastle remains strong, but they probably will not be able to strike a deal in January.

He is a key player for Burnley, and they are in the hunt for promotion back to the Premier League. As a result, they may not be willing to do business next month.

The highly-rated goalkeeper is still keen on a move to St James’ Park.

Replacement for Nick Pope

Nick Pope remains the first-choice keeper at Newcastle, but the club should make plans to sign a young goalkeeper who can be his long-term replacement.

The 32-year-old goalkeeper is currently out injured and he won’t return until the latter half of January.

In his absence, Martin Dubravka has been asked to handle the duty. However, Dubravka is being wanted by Saudi Pro League side Al-Shabab, and he may find it hard to reject such a lucrative offer.

Dubravka has started in the past two games for the Magpies, and he is expected to continue before Pope makes a return.

Eddie Howe wants the veteran to stay on Tyneside, but the club will not prevent him from leaving if he gets a good offer from elsewhere in January.

The Magpies boss has stressed the importance of adding quality players to the side, but they are very cautious about spending due to the PSR threat.

At some point next summer, Newcastle will need to sign a new goalkeeper, and Trafford would be a fantastic signing for them.

Newcastle could face competition from Premier League rivals Tottenham for his signature. Spurs have also reportedly earmarked him as a potential option following a long-term injury to Guglielmo Vicario.
