It was a mixed and interesting season for AS Roma fans in the 2023/24 domestic Italian Serie A campaign last year, as ultimately the clubs’ board finally has enough of Jose Mourinho’s off pitch distractions and criticisms, and parting ways with him in mid January, club playing legend Daniele De Rossi too the reins and basically eclipsed almost everyone’s expectations.

The 40 year-old, 117 capped Italian international midfielder went on to oversee 26 games in the second half of the last campaign, turning our form around with 13 wins across available competitions and seven draws to secure sixth place in the table. For those who enjoy playing online pokies for entertainment, the odds and options of De Rossi having that kind of more immediate impact would have come as a surprise to plenty. In spite of that though, many would argue that we had slightly run out of steam in the final few weeks of the campaign, and that De Rossi had done enough to deserve a slightly higher league finish, but for those that the he won over would very easily point to very winnable games that we did not capitalise on earlier in the season before he took charge as being more to blame for that.

For now though, it is all eyes to what kind of business we do in the summer transfer window, and inevitably the transfer speculation rumour mill does have us strongly linked with some very interesting potential candidates, and of the latest is Norwegian international striker Alexander Sorloth.

The 28 year-old attacker, who stands at 6 feet 4 inches tall, has moved around a fair bit in the opening decade of his career, and given his age and the experience that he has built up of the different European divisions would suggest he is now entering the prime of his career. He has naturally had ups and downs through those years, but with 229 starting appearances at club level to his name, he has returned 115 goals and 37 assists.

Having already travelled from Norway to Belgium, the Netherlands and England, the last few years have seen him in the Spanish La Liga, and in 39 appearances for Villarreal last term, he had a career year, scoring 26 times.

Few would doubt as to why we would have an interest in bringing him in if a deal could be done, but after last season if his current club are willing to let him go, they will undoubtedly be looking to cash in at a valuation that at least touches the ballpark of €30-35 million.

Italian outlet La Repubblica have claimed that sources have informed them that the Norwegian is eager to make a switch to the Stadio Olimpico and try his hand in the Serie A, but many will feel that this kind of fee could actually prove prohibitive – or at the very least be potentially too big a slice of De Rossi’s transfer budget for this summer to go in one direction only.

That concern only grows when yo look further at the inconsistency levels that he has shown down the years of his career so far. He was undoubtedly very good last season, and it is clear what e is capable of achieving if we can service him and get him ticking, but at that presumed fee it would be a gamble and that money could be better spent on assumptive more reliable producers.

With the club bringing in roughly 15 million Euros from the recent sales of both Houssem Aouar and Jan Oliveras to Saudi Arabian Pro League side Al-Ittihad, much may depend on what the future holds for fellow striker Tammy Abraham and his heavily anticipated departure.

Particularly as it is already well appreciated that we are in the hunt for wingers Federico Chiesa and Matias Soule, and they could set us back a cool 60 million Euros on their own, and that too would bring any deal for Sorloth into doubt if his fee was above the 30 million area.

It is certainly an interesting one to watch as August continues to approach, but it feels like this one may quickly fall to the wayside.
