Social Hour: Florida State's 'state championship' rings weren't cheap

Remember those “state championship” rings Florida State gave out for beating Florida and Miami (and South Florida) in 2015? Well, they weren’t cheap. A purchase order provided to Deadspin by FSU’s athletic department show a total price of $62,010 for 265 rings. Additionally, 64 Peach Bowl (which FSU lost to Houston) pendants were also purchased, bringing the total purchase order to a whopping $73,210.

Texas A&M got good news on the recruiting trail on Monday night when Kellen Mond announced his verbal commitment to the program. Mond, a four-star quarterback in the class of 2017 out of IMG Academy in Florida, was previously committed to Baylor. He opened up his recruitment after Art Briles was fired.

Sad news came out of USC on Monday. Tom Kelly, the longtime Trojans announcer, died at the age of 88. He first called USC football and basketball games in 1961.

You don’t hear this every day. BYU kicker Austin Brasher has reportedly decided to give up football to pursue dentistry. He had 33 touchbacks in 2015 as a kickoff specialist.

After a redshirt season at South Carolina, wide receiver Jalen Christian announced his will drop down a level to play for FCS William & Mary. Christian was a four-star recruit in the Gamecocks’ 2015 class.
