Skylar Thompson ramps up throwing activity at Miami Dolphins practice

Miami Dolphins quarterback Skylar Thompson (19) arrives for pregame warmups at the NFL game against the Tennessee Titans at Hard Rock Stadium on Monday, September 30, 2024, in Miami Gardens, Fla.

Good news for all the Skylar Thompson fans.

The Miami Dolphins backup quarterback was seen throwing for more than 10 yards on Tuesday, the first time since he sustained a rib injury in the Sept. 22 game against the Seattle Seahawks.

In an interview after practice, Thompson noted that he feels a lot better.

“I’m starting to turn a corner,” Thompson said of the injury. “The whole goal for all of this was getting to a point where I can function and kind of going from there. I finally feel like I’m at a point where I’m not limited when I’m throwing.”

Thompson mentioned that he still feels “some discomfort” yet ultimately believes that the pain is far more manageable now.

“I should be good,” Thompson continued. “I have a week to rest again and then getting into next week, we’ll see where we’re at.”

Added Thompson: “I definitely feel more comfortable” throwing.

Thompson has been deemed inactive for back-to-back games, though he was listed as the emergency third quarterback against the Tennessee Titans. The former Kansas State Wildcat took a big hit courtesy of Seattle Seahawks defensive end Dre’Mont Jones that had him down on the ground for several minutes. Trainers tended to him and the third-year quarterback eventually walked off the field on his power.

“It was a rib injury that was pretty painful,” coach Mike McDaniel remarked after the Sept. 22 game. Heading into the New England Patriots game, McDaniel said that Thompson still struggled with “the injury that he sustained,” adding that “it’s been kind of (laborious) getting back.”

Thompson threw for 187 yards and completed roughly 64% of his passes across his two appearances, only one of which came as a starter. He hadn’t played meaningful snaps since his rookie year when he filled in for a concussed Tua Tagovailoa. During that seven-game span, Thompson threw for 754 yards, two touchdowns and five interceptions. He also completed 52% of his passes.

While it appears that the former Kansas State star could be available for the Oct. 20 game against the Indianapolis Colts, McDaniel remained committed to Tyler “Snoop” Huntley.

“I think I feel as it stands right now, I feel very happy with the way ‘Snoop,’” McDaniel said Monday. “I thought went from managing the offense so to speak his first outing to – I thought he was executing the offense and that’s to his credit. So I feel pretty good about how fast he’s developed, and I would guess to forecast continuing that development process with the offense as the operation was better but not as good as it could be and you hope that with continuity, there’s an improvement in that.”

In his two games as a starter, Huntley has completed roughly 60% of his passes enroute to throwing for 290 yards and a interception. He’s also rushed 11 times for 47 yards and a touchdown. Huntley also is the only quarterback outside of Tua Tagovailoa to lead the Dolphins to victory in 2024 — something he did despite only being signed for less than a month.

“It felt good to be out there with the guys,” Huntley said after Sunday’s win. “Just every play, every drive, I’m feeling more comfortable and more in tune with my guys and I know they feel the same with me.”

The Dolphins were without a bunch of players in what was their last practice of the week. Calais Campbell, David Long Jr., Jalen Ramsey, Jevón Holland, Jordan Poyer, Kendall Fuller, De’Von Achane and Malik Washington were all missing as well. It should be noted that several of the aforementioned players including Long (hamstring), Holland (hand), Poyer (shin), Achane (concussion), Washington (quadricep), Ramsey (knee) and Fuller (concussion) have been previously listed on injury reports. Campbell was likely a veteran rest.

As the list of injured players shows, the bye week couldn’t have come at a better time for the Dolphins. They need to rest up and get healthy before the final stretch of the season.
