(Lost-Canadians)

Immigration Minister Marc Miller is expected to table citizenship legislation today that would address the problem of so-called "Lost Canadians."

Amendments to the Citizenship Act in 1977 and 2009 stripped thousands of people who were born abroad of their Canadian citizenship.

Last year, the Ontario Superior Court found the current system unconstitutionally creates two classes of Canadians.

The court said Ottawa must fix the problem by June 19th. (6)

Analysts say Canada's aid spending abroad and at home reflects an especially turbulent period in geopolitics.

With millions looking for refuge outside their home countries, a fifth of overall aid spending never leaves Canada's borders.

Some 19 per cent of Canada's foreign aid reported to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development last year benefited refugees and Ukrainians within Canada.

The One Campaign, which fights poverty in African countries, says Canada is focused more on responding to crises than helping countries prevent problems down the road. (6)

(G7-Finance-Ministers)

Ukraine's allies are looking for ways to squeeze money out of frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine fend off Russia's invasion.

After the February 2022 invasion, Western countries quickly froze the Russian central bank holdings kept outside the country.

Europe has balked at confiscating the funds outright over legal concerns.

The G-7, which includes Canada, are meeting to look at ways to tap the future interest payments to give Ukraine money right now when it's most needed. (6)

(China-Tesla)

Chinese state media report Tesla has begun construction of a factory in Shanghai to make its Megapack energy storage batteries.

The 200-million-dollar plant will be the first Tesla battery plant outside the United States.

The electric vehicle maker says each Megapack can store more than 3.9 megawatt hours of energy -- enough to power an average of 36-hundred homes for one hour.

They are designed mainly for utility companies and commercial facilities.

Such storage units have become increasingly important with the growth in solar and wind energy. (6)

Kilmer Sports Ventures, headed by Toronto businessman Larry Tanenbaum, has been awarded a women's professional basketball team.

Toronto's W-N-B-A team doesn't yet have a name, but will start playing in May 2026.

It will be the W-N-B-A's 14th franchise -- and the first outside the U-S. (6)
