Sixers' Joel Embiid cracks 3-1 joke after Game 4 win over Nets

Two things remained true after the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Brooklyn Nets 112-108 to take a 3-1 series lead on Saturday: Joel Embiid is a funny man, and 3-1 jokes will never die.

Embiid, who had 31 points, 16 rebounds and seven assists in the win, cracked a joke in the postgame news conference about, well, what else?

“We don't want to be in the situation like the Warriors two years ago,” Embiid said.

As the room burst into laughter, Jimmy Butler, sitting to Embiid’s left, had to leave the podium.

The joke, of course, is a reference to the fact that the Golden State Warriors blew a 3-1 lead to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2016 NBA Finals. Last week, the 3-1 jokes resurfaced after the Warriors gave up a 31-point lead to the Los Angeles Clippers in Game 2 of their first round series.

The likelihood of the Nets making the comeback is unlikely, but again, that’s what we said when the 73-win Warriors seemed destined to close out the Cavaliers in 2016. Plus, the Nets led in Game 4 all the way until the final minutes and already beat the Sixers in Game 1 on the road.

So, could Embiid end up eating his words? Potentially — but for now, enjoy the continuing relevance of the 3-1 joke.
