Manchester United’s struggles in front of goal last season played a huge part in the club registering its lowest-ever Premier League finish.

Erik ten Hag’s men were comfortably the lowest scorers among the top eight sides and will be looking to make changes to their striking department this summer.

As well as incomings, United are also offloading some players that have been considered to be not ready to make the grade at Old Trafford.

Academy sensation Charlie McNeill falls into that category and has now sealed a permanent move away from Manchester.

As reported by BBC Sport, McNeill has signed for Championship side Sheffield Wednesday on a permanent deal.

The fee is yet to be disclosed, as is the length of the contract but the striker is now officially a Wednesday player after The Peoples Person confirmed the interest previously. The deal has been confirmed by both clubs.

Having signed for United from rivals Manchester City after scoring a bucketload of goals at youth level, big things were expected from McNeill at the Theatre of Dreams.

However, things didn’t go to plan for the Englishman whose solitary appearance for United at senior level came in the Europa League group stage against Real Sociedad back in 2022.

Ten Hag was the man to grant McNeill his United bow but clearly hasn’t seen enough from the striker to warrant keeping him on at the club.

Loan spells at Newport County and Stevenage allowed him to gain first-team experience but his last temporary stint did not go to plan.

McNeill scored on his Stevenage debut last term but only registered two further appearances, being named as unused substitute on four occasions. He was subsequently recalled and that almost ended any chance of earning a breakthrough at the Red Devils.

Wednesday have decided the FA Youth Cup winner is worth a punt and the forward will be hoping for an upturn in fortunes at Hillsborough.

Meanwhile, United are hoping to add to their attacking numbers in the coming weeks with a deal for Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee reportedly close to completion.

Ten Hag will be well aware of the need for more goals in the upcoming campaign with major improvements needed upfront.
