Sharks Top Defenseman Reveals Non-Hockey Reason For Healthy Scratch

In an exclusive interview with SJHN's Sheng Peng, San Jose Sharks defenseman Jake Walman revealed the non-hockey reason why he was a healthy scratch against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Nov. 5.

Walman told SJHN that he missed a treatment session for an upper-body injury, which broke a team rule. Walman took an awkward hit against the Vancouver Canucks and left at the end of the first period, briefly but came back for the start of the second period.

"It was coach's decision after that. Obviously, I respect the decision. I would expect that guys are in there, trying to fix their injuries as soon as possible. I just misunderstood that on our treatment day there. That's what that was," Walman told SJHN. "I acknowledge it, own up to it. I think it was a good decision from coach to hold me accountable and won't happen again. We'll move on from it."

Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky initially thought the defenseman would play against the Minnesota Wild on Nov. 7, but the injury held him out. Warsofsky said he would've been a game-time decision against the Blue Jackets if the disciplinary action hadn't occurred.

Walman told SJHN that he hoped to play against the New Jersey Devils tomorrow night.

Walman said that the story of his scratching was blown up more than it should've been, but both he and the Sharks have moved on as it is "water under the bridge."
