Sharks Send Down Top Goalie Prospect After First Win

The San Jose Sharks announced that they have sent top goalie prospect Yaroslav Askarov down and recalled defenseman Jack Thompson.

Askarov made two starts in the NHL for the Sharks and earned his first win with his new team with a 22-save performance on Monday against the Los Angeles Kings. He also earned his first career assist on Nico Sturm's opening goal.

The Sharks are choosing not to carry three goalies and will continue to run with Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek as their tandem. While it is disappointing not to see the goalie of the future stay in the NHL, putting Askarov back with the San Jose Barracuda for playing time can only improve his game.

Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky praised his goalie after his performance last night.

"He was good. He looks more and more comfortable every period he plays in the NHL," Warsofsky said. "[He] looks calm in the net and made some big saves."

Askarov aggressively plays the puck out of the crease, and while this has some benefits, it definitely worries the head coach at times.

"It is nice to have him come cut some rims in the defensive zone so we can stop pucks up and get numbers around it. He does a really good job of it," Warsofsky said. "We get to monitor it a little bit, but he's confident with the puck and a confident kid."
