"Just jokes, but it's funny and fun to post on Christmas. I thought it was funny," Smith said. "We were bored. It was an off day, and I think we played basketball for three hours, so it was fun."
Smith said he was better than Celebrini at basketball and told reporters they played a "massive series."
"It was all one of our off days, and we'd been playing basketball for three hours, just messing around," Celebrini said. "Then I don't know. We started joking around about it. Have you seen that video that they made? We just decided to try to recreate it. It wasn't very good."
Celebrini said he didn't hear from anyone on the Golden State Warriors despite his connections with the team through his father.
The original video on Smith's TikTok has 696.2K views and counting, with over 97K likes. However, those numbers don't represent the millions of other views that have been cumulated over various social media outlets that share the video.
"We made it three weeks ago," Celebrini said. "It wasn't even like last yesterday or whatever. Then Will was just like, I might post it and see what happens."
Smith said he didn't think the video would go as viral as it has.
"Celebrini had the tougher lines. So I'd say [he's better at lip syncing,]" Smith said. "I kind of had an idea it would blow up. I didn't think it would be that much, so it is pretty cool."
Smith lives with Patrick Marleau, and Celebrini lives with Joe Thornton. When asked if the rookies would ever get the Sharks legends to join them in a video, neither ruled it out.
"I don't know. I don't want to take it too far. We'll see, though," Smith said.
"I don't know. We gotta discuss it, we gotta discuss it," Celebrini said.
Celebrini and Smith will skate together on the same line when the San Jose Sharks take on the Vegas Golden Knights tonight.
