Arizona Coyotes captain Shane Doan will return for his 21st season with the team.

According to Arizona Sports, Doan and the Coyotes have agreed to a one-year deal.

A source told Arizona Sports that the “base salary is $2.5 million with a deferred signing bonus and deferred incentives that will bring the deal’s worth to about $5 million.”

A league source confirmed to Puck Daddy that the 39-year-old Doan will return to the Coyotes on a one-year contract. Not including Doan’s new deal, the Coyotes have 17,968,296 of salary cap space and are over $1 million above the floor.

Doan just finished a four-year contract worth $21.2 million and was an unrestricted free agent. He was drafted seventh overall by the Winnipeg Jets in 1995 before the team moved to the Phoenix area and became the Coyotes

Last season Doan had 28 goals and 47 points, which proved a nice bounce-back from the year before when he scored 14 goals and 36 points. In 2015-16 he set the record for both career goals and career points for the Jets/Coyotes organization.

Doan currently has 945 points and 396 goals in 1,466 career NHL games with the Jets and Coyotes. Last season Doan held a 0.43 score and venue adjusted 5-on-5 CF% Rel and a 47.03 5-on-5 score and venue adjusted 5-on-5 CF%.

Doan spoke with Puck Daddy before the end of the NHL season and said he needed to chat with his family before making a choice on another year.

“They give up a lot for me to have the opportunity to do this. As they’ve gotten older their lives have become more and more involved and busier themselves,” Doan said. “My wife has put her life on hold for 21 years as she takes care of the kids and whatever I need to do. I’m conscious and aware of all that and need to be cognizant that at some point you have to be able to give a little bit yourself.”

In an interview with the Arizona Republic last week, Arizona general manager John Chayka said a one-year deal made the most sense for Doan and the team.

“We’re hopeful that we can get something done here at some point,” Chayka said. “It’s one of those things you can’t rush it. You go through it, and you make sure that you get it right for both parties.”

During the offseason, Doan said he wasn’t worried a deal would get done at some point with the Coyotes.

“We feel like we’re close on most of everything,” Doan said. “Just trying to figure out if it can all work inside their parameters and if we can figure out a way to make it work inside of mine, find a spot where it all lines up.”

Doan was last an unrestricted free agent in 2012, when he chose loyalty and opted to stay in Arizona. The Coyotes haven’t made the playoffs since 2012 when they made the Western Conference Final, but Doan hasn’t fretted about his choice to stay in Arizona.

Said Doan in an interview around the start of the 2015-16 regular season, “I’m not really worried too much about in the past if I had opportunities to go somewhere or do something, I chose not to and I’m really happy with my decision.”

UPDATE: Tuesday afternoon, the Coyotes and Doan officially announced he will return on a one-year contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
