Serena Williams speaks out on Philando Castile shooting: ‘When will something be done?’

After winning her semifinal match at Wimbledon Thursday, Serena Williams took the time to acknowledge the shooting of Philando Castile. Castile, a 32-year-old black man, was shot and killed Wednesday night by a police officer during a traffic stop in Minnesota. His girlfriend live-streamed the aftermath of the incident on Facebook, and the video has since received more than 3 million views.

“In London I have to wake up to this,” she writes. “He was black. Shot 4 times? When will something be done-no REALLY be done?!?!”

Castile’s death came one day after another black man, Alton Sterling, was shot and killed by police outside a convenience store in Baton Rouge, La.

Williams is not the first athlete to address these recent police shootings. NFL stars Colin Kaepernick and Reggie Bush and NBA stars Chris Paul, Jamal Crawford and Damian Lillard are among those who have spoken out.
