See how Caltrans snowplows met near Highway 108 crest. How far up can you drive in Tuolumne?

Snowplow crews working both sides of Sonora Pass met up for the first time this week, video from the California Department of Transportation shows.

Despite clearing the eight to 10 feet of snow from Highway 108, crews haven’t reopened the pass. They still need to deal with flooding issues, remove fallen trees and rocks, and repair potholes and guardrails before the Sierra Nevada route can open.

Highway 108 runs from downtown Modesto and through the town of Sonora on its way to the upper elevations of Tuolumne and Mono counties. It opened as far as Kennedy Meadows on May 15, to the relief of businesses worried that visitors might be blocked until July.

Caltrans has not announced when the final leg over the 9,623-foot pass will be ready. Its video shows crews from District 10 on the west meeting with colleagues from District 9 on the east on Tuesday, June 6.
