For the second time in less than a week, KC Chiefs lose tight end to knee injury
Kansas City Chefs tight end Jared Wiley suffered a torn ACL in practice this week in a non-contact drill, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said on Saturday.
“One of those freak things,” Reid said.
The rookie from TCU has appeared in all seven games, starting two. He has one reception for 7 yards.
Reid said Peyton Hendershot will be elevated from the practice squad for the “Monday Night Football” game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Arrowhead.
Wiley, who started his college career at Texas, was selected in the fourth round of the NFL Draft. He’s played 94 snaps on offense and nine on special teams.
Hendershot, acquired in a trade with the Dallas Cowboys before the season, has appeared in one game for the Chiefs.
It’s the second tight end lost to injury in less than a week. Jody Fortson also suffered a torn ACL and meniscus while fielding at onside kick in last week’s game at the Las Vegas Raiders.
Fortson was placed on injured reserve.
Also, Reid said that wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, who hasn’t played or practiced since aggravating a hamstring injury against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 6, won’t play Monday.
Cornerback Nazeeh Johnson, who entered the concussion protocol this week, also has been ruled out, along with defensive end Mike Danna with a pectoral injury.
As for Patrick Mahomes, who has been listed on the injury report with an ankle injury this week: “He’s doing good,” Reid said. “It hasn’t slowed him up at all.”
