Who They're for: Golfers with an arced putting stroke who want more stability and forgiveness without sacrificing tour-level feel.

What you should know: Two of the most popular mallets in the Scotty Cameron stable get popular hosels, so they swing like classic blade-style putters.

The deep dive: While Golfweek can’t confirm it, part of the job description for being a PGA Tour rep for Scotty Cameron likely includes never saying “no” to a tour player. If someone wants a different hosel on a putter, the answer is yes. Unique stamping on the toe or back of a putter? Yes. A replica of their putter to keep as a backup? Of course.

On the retail side, however, “no” is sometimes the answer for a variety of reasons. But in 2025, at least one “no” is being turned into a “yes” with the release of the Scotty Cameron Phantom 5.2 and 7.2 mallets.

The 5.2 features one of the most popular head shapes in the Scotty Cameron lineup and has been used over the years by players such as Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay and Max Homa. It features wing-style extensions in the heel and toe area that increase perimeter weighting, making the putter more stable on mishits.

The 7.2 has a similar shape, but the extensions are more pointed.

What sets these putters apart from previously released Phantom 5.5 and 7.5 putters is the number after the decimal in their names. In Scotty-speak, a “.2” designation typically means the putter has been designed with a plumber’s neck hosel. This configuration produces toe hang and is best suited for golfers with a slightly arced putting stroke. Previously, the Phantom 5 and Phantom 7 putters were only available with mid-bend or short slant-neck hosels.

For years, comments on Scotty Cameron’s social media accounts have been filled with requests for a plumber’s neck version of the Phantom 5 and Phantom 7. Finally, the answer is “yes.”

Many golfers, especially those transitioning from blade-style putters, prefer a plumber’s neck hosel. This design positions a golfer’s hands more forward, and the hosel’s angles and edges can aid in alignment and aiming. PGA Tour players have requested this setup for several seasons, and now weekend players and amateurs can benefit too.

Both the Phantom 5.2 and 7.2 feature heads are milled from blocks of 303 stainless steel and include the same dual-mill face pattern across the hitting area as the previously released Phantom putters. The milling process involves two steps. The first creates deep, circular cuts in the face for a low-pitched sound at impact. The second pass flattens the points created by the first, allowing more steel to contact the ball. According to Scotty Cameron, this delivers the sound of a deep mill with enhanced feel.

To improve stability, Cameron removed a large portion of the steel in both heads and covered the sole with an aluminum plate. The aluminum is lighter than steel, allowing more weight to be distributed to the heel and toe areas.

Fitters can adjust the circular weights in the sole to ensure the ideal swing weight for each putter. However, those weights are not designed for golfers to adjust on their own.
