Scoring run has improved my confidence, says Foden

Phil Foden says his run of five goals in his last three Premier League games has boosted his confidence.

Our brilliant Academy graduate failed to score in the top-flight this term until the 21 December, but he has his since found his form – netting six times.

His slow start to this season was difficult for Foden after a prolific 2023/24 when he scored 27 times and claimed a sweep of individual awards including the Premier League Player of the Season, Etihad Player of the Year, FWA Footballer of the Year and PFA Players’ Player of the Year

However, the 24-year-old now feels he’s back in the groove.

“I just feel like once you score that first goal there is just a different confidence inside you that you can go on to score more goals,” he said.

“I feel like that goal against West Ham was the start of a little switch for me where I felt more confident in myself and it definitely helped. It was obviously nice to play the way I did against Ipswich.”

Foden has not been the only member of Pep Guardiola’s squad of defending champions that have struggled at times for form and fitness this season.

Ahead of our clash with Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, we sit fifth in the Premier League with 38 points from 22 games.

We head into this game knowing that victory will see us leapfrog Enzo Maresca’s side and return to the top four.

While Foden accepts it’s not been the ideal season so far, he insists there’s still a lot for us to play for.

“It’s been a very challenging season and not one that we are used to,” he said.

“It’s been hard to keep a fully-fit squad and we have had a lot of injuries.

“There’s a lot of pressure on us to deliver because that is just the way it is when you have been one of the best in the last few seasons.

“It is about sticking together and trying to deal with that pressure.

“Now with the new signings hopefully we can pick up our performances, change the season and be better in this second half of the season.”

One of those new signings is Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush.

Marmoush comes from Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt, where he was enjoying a spectacular season in front of goal.

The 25-year-old’s arrival bolsters the attacking options in the squad and Foden welcomes the challenge that comes with increased competition to make Guardiola’s side.

“I feel like since I have come into the team that is how it has always been, a lot of competition for places,” he said.

“It is healthy because you know that if you have got the shirt then you have to perform or else you will be out of the team.

“I think it is good, so with the new signings it can definitely bring that back for sure.”
