Saturday’s high school rewind: Country Day coach David Carrier honored for 500th career win

Before Saturday’s game with rival Providence Day, Charlotte Country Day honored boys’ basketball coach David Carrier, who got his 500th career win this month.

Carrier is believed to be the fourth Mecklenburg County boys’ coach to reach 500 wins.

Longtime Charlotte Latin coach Jerry Faulkner, who started coaching in 1967 and retired recently from a job in South Carolina, won more than 900 games. The late Charles McCullough of West Charlotte won nearly 600 at his alma mater from 1960-93. In February of the 2022-23 season, three-time NCHSAA 4A state champion Duane Lewis of North Mecklenburg won his 500th game.

On the girls side, Myers Park coach Barbara Nelson, who won seven state titles at Providence Day, has 797 overall wins, including two more state titles at Myers Park. The Observer named Nelson the best girls basketball coach of the past 40 years in April.

Carrier started his career at Providence Day, a school he led to two state championships and four straight finals appearances from 1996-2000. In 11 seasons at Providence Day, Carrier was 227-93.

After Providence Day, Carrier coached at Kerr-Vance Academy in Henderson, North Carolina, and Westchester Country Day in High Point.

He’s been at Charlotte Country Day since the fall of 2020.

Now in his 30th season, Carrier has only had two teams not finish above .500.
