Saturday’s high school basketball rewind: Cam Newman, Gaston Christian stop Queens Grant

Cameron Newman led Gaston Christian to victory after scoring two late-game free throws to defeat Queen’s Grant 58-56 at the Phenom Hoops/Carmel Christian Tip Off Classic.

Newman’s winning free throws capped a 19-point performance to seal the win for Gaston Christian, which improved to 2-0 on the season.

“He’s the captain and leader of our team,” Gaston Christian coach Chris Duhon said after the game. “He wants the ball in those tight situations. We trust him with the ball and that he’s going to make the right play and that doesn’t always have to be scoring.”

Late into the fourth quarter, the game was tied at 54 until Gaston Christian forward Giannis Katsoulas scored a tough layup to give his team the lead.

On the next possession, Queen’s Grant forward Chase Smith was sent to the line and he made both free-throw attempts to tie the game at 56.

That’s when Duhon — a former star point guard at Duke — called a play for Newman to take the final shot and as the clock ran down, Newman was fouled on his winning shot attempt.

Newman was sent to the line and he swished both attempts to put Gaston Christian up 58-56.

Newman made plays all game with 19 points, four rebounds and five assists. In addition to Newman, forward Dario Williams scored 12 points with five rebounds, one block and one assist.

“We showed some resiliency today. Things didn’t always go our way as far as execution,” Duhon said. “We fought back. Guys made some big plays, guys contributed in their own way and we were able to pull off the win.”
