Saturday’s boys’ basketball rewind: Burlington School routs No. 4 Chambers at Lynch Invitational

In an early-season matchup of expected state basketball powers, The Burlington School started and finished fast in its 56-42 win over Chambers in the George Lynch Invitational on Saturday at Myers Park High School.

The Spartans were completing a weekend sweep of Charlotte teams at the event as they beat Providence Day 58-54 the night before.

“The weekend was really good for us,” said The Burlington School coach George Marshall, whose team improved to 5-2. “We played two really good teams and two teams who play really different styles and we’re happy to come away 2-0.”

In Saturday’s win, the Spartans’ defense forced four turnovers and three missed shots in the first 4:51 to roar ahead 9-0 over the Cougars (1-1).

Marshall knew Chambers, a 20-win team the past three years, would settle itself and get back into the game.

“I told the kids in a timeout that they weren’t going away and we better keep playing hard and well,” Marshall said.

The Cougars closed within 11-8 by the end of the opening quarter, got within 25-23 late in the second quarter and trailed 44-38 entering the fourth quarter.

But game MVP Kaden Hammond (17 points, 15 rebounds) and his talented teammates put the game away with an 8-0 surge to open the final period to take a commanding 52-38 lead with 4:17 to play.

Three who made a difference

Kaden Hammond, The Burlington School: The 6-foot-8 senior who’s currently receiving NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III recruiting attention had 17 points and 15 rebounds, including eight points in the third quarter.

King Gibson, The Burlington School: The sophomore guard who is rated No. 13 in his class by Phenom Hoops had 13 points and three highlight-reel dunks for the Spartans, including a driving jam in traffic for a three-point play in the third quarter.

Markus Kerr, Chambers: A junior guard rated No. 98 in his class by Phenom Hoops had a game-high 22 points and scored in every quarter.

Notable

The game matched two perennial powers in their respective classes. The Burlington School won three straight N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 2A state titles from 2021-23 and advanced to the quarterfinals a year ago. Chambers has won 22, 24 and 22 games respectively the last three years, with two advances to the Western N.C. 4A semifinals.

Chambers junior Tarris Bouie III had nine points, nine rebounds and three steals and had a coast-to-coast drive for a spectacular slam dunk in the second quarter. Bouie is a top 100 recruit nationally.

The Cougars committed five turnovers in a first quarter in which they were outscored 11-8, and six turnovers in a fourth quarter when they were outscored 12-4.

They said it

“We’ve still got a lot of work to do. But as a young team, we’re taking some really big steps.” — The Burlington School coach George Marshall
