Saturday’s basketball rewind: No. 5 Davidson Day stops No. 14 Weddington at Gminski Classic
Davidson Day was without its top player, UNC signee Isaiah Denis, but the Patriots had no problem with Weddington in Saturday’s featured game at Phenom Hoops’ Mike Gminski Classic at Cox Mill High School.
With Denis out with a broken finger, Davidson Day, No. 5 in The Observer’s Sweet 16, rolled past No. 14 Weddington 74-53.
Davidson Day opened the game up, outscoring Weddington 16-6 in the second quarter after the teams were tied at 15 after the first quarter.
By the start of the fourth, the Patriots led 49-35.
Lincoln Vinson (17 points), Levon Jacobs (16), Andrew Washington (14) and Will Stevens (14) provided balanced scoring for Davidson Day.
KJ Younger had 21 for Weddington.
Saturday’s #BIG5 top performers
Ginny Anne Dumont, Providence Day: Dumont had a team-high 23 points in a 52-49 win over Tennessee’s Daniel Boone. Providence Day won its seventh straight game and improved to 9-5.
JaKaila Gaskin, Cannon School girls: Gaskin led the Cougars with 13 points in a 47-33 win over Thomas Dale at the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach. Cannon will play in the championship game Monday against Bishop Ireton (Virginia), ranked No. 12 nationally by MaxPreps.
RJ Moore, Corvian: The sophomore guard had 29 points in a 71-30 win over York at the Border Classic at Independence High. In three games this week, Moore averaged 29 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists. Corvian went 3-0 in those games.
Brycen Redmond, Westminster Catawba: Redmon had a game-high 33 points in a 60-38 win over Hartsville.
Symphani Stevens, Lincoln Charter girls: Stevens scored 16 of her game-high 18 points in the second half of a 66-36 win over North Rowan.
