Sabres suspend Zach Bogosian for not reporting to AHL affiliate
We’ve heard stories about players losing their interest in hockey after playing for the Buffalo Sabres, but Zach Bogosian may have taken it to a new level.
Bogosian was placed on waivers by the Sabres on Feb. 14, but went unclaimed. After clearing waivers, the Sabres assigned Bogosian to the AHL’s Rochester Americans, but he did not report.
Buffalo suspended Bogosian for failing to accept his assignment and released the following statement:
“The Buffalo Sabres have suspended defenseman Zach Bogosian due to failure to report to the Rochester Americans.
“There will be no further information or comment at this time.”
Bogosian’s agent hinted that his client would be on the move Saturday after clearing waivers.
“I will be meeting with Zach over the next couple of days to discuss his next steps,” Darren Ferris, Bogosian’s agent, wrote to The Associated Press.
In retrospect, the writing was on the wall for both parties. Bogosian reportedly demanded a trade in December but his request wasn’t met. Bogosian was a frequent healthy scratch prior to being placed on waivers, registering a goal and five points in 19 games after missing the start of the season due to a hip injury.
The trade deadline is a week away and with Bogosian refusing to accept his assignment, it’ll be compelling to see if the Sabres get anything of value in return for the veteran defenceman, who is in the final year of his contract.
