Ryan Strome’s New Tape Job Coinciding With Ducks Victories

Someone call up Stevie Wonder, because there’s very superstitious writings on the wall in the Ducks’ locker room.

A crazy comeback win last night against the Winnipeg Jets has the Ducks on a three-game winning streak heading into tonight’s matchup against the Edmonton Oilers. The Ducks will be looking to do the double on the Oilers after beating them in Anaheim on Dec. 29.

A big part of those wins has been Ryan Strome, who is also on a three-game point streak. Perhaps a reason for the sudden burst of production? His stick tape color has changed.

Typically a white stick tape user, Ducks broadcast host Aly Lozoff revealed on Victory+ last night that Strome had switched to black stick tape after experiencing a 12-game goal drought.

While last night’s effort wasn’t pretty by any means, the Ducks were able to walk away with two points. Their performances against the Oilers and the New Jersey Devils reflect more impressive victories, both powered by game-winning goals from Strome.

“He can bridge that gap between the young kids and himself (in terms of communication,” Ducks head coach Greg Cronin said. “I think what he’s done a really good job of is taking the coaches’ messages and sprinkling it across the room.

“He’s not a ‘rah-rah’, in-your-face type of guy, but he’s a likable guy. He’s got a calmness to him. He’s also got some bite to him. We’ve seen him get in fights. He’s fearless. He’s got a nice combination of toughness and wisdom and communication skills to really bond the group together.”

With his new tape job, Strome is now spurring the Ducks on and off the ice.
