Ryan Poles confirms Thomas Brown will interview for Bears head coach
The Chicago Bears are searching for a new head coach following the firing of Matt Eberflus earlier this year, and it sounds like a familiar face will get a serious look.
During the Bears pregame show on ESPN 1000, general manager Ryan Poles said interim head coach Thomas Brown will be given a formal interview for the Bears' head coach opening.
“He’s been here," Poles said. "He’s seen and reflected just like we have on the past and how we got to this and why the results were the results. I’m excited to hear from his side on how we got here and how he would fix it.”
Brown started the season as the Bears' passing game coordinator, but he was promoted to offensive coordinator following the firing of Shane Waldron. Chicago's offense, and quarterback Caleb Williams, showed progress under Brown in the weeks that followed. Brown got a second promotion to interim head coach after Eberflus was fired after another clock management issue in a Thanksgiving loss to the Detroit Lions.
Unfortunately, Brown's tenure as interim head coach has been disastrous. The Bears are 0-4, where the offense has averaged just 11.25 points per game and the defense has been giving up an average 27 points per game. Granted, Brown inherited a team riding a six-game losing streak with a culture that players have indicated needs an overhaul.
Poles praised Brown for his leadership amid what was a difficult situation he inherited.
"I've been so impressed with Thomas and his leadership," Poles said. "I know the results haven't come. That was a very difficult situation he was put in."
Brown isn't considered a serious contender for the job, but Chicago will do right by him and giving him a chance to formally interview for the job as they do their due diligence in this coaching search.
