Ryan Johansen Clears Waivers; Files Grievance Against Flyers

Ryan Johansen's agent has put out a statement confirming that a grievance will be filed against the Philadelphia Flyers after the organization placed Johansen on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract.

Johansen was traded to the Flyers from the Colorado Avalanche back in March, but has not played a single game for Philadelphia, claiming to be suffering from a serious hip injury.

It was announced on Tuesday that the Flyers would be placing him on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract, specifically citing a "material breach" as the reason for their decision. This means that one party has not sufficiently held up their end of the contract, causing damage to the other party.

Johansen's agent said in the statement that the forward "has a severe hockey injury that requires extensive surgery which has been scheduled" and insisted that "Ryan has worked in good faith with the [Flyers], its medical staff, and authorized third party physicians."

The statement confirmed that they have contacted the NHL Players' Association and have vowed to "defend Ryan and protect his rights."

There has been rampant speculation that Johansen has been embellishing, and even completely faking, his injury because he didn't want to be traded away from the Avalanche.

Some social media users have pointed to instances of Johansen dancing and enjoying himself at his wedding as "proof" that his injury is not as severe as he says.

The Flyers have stated that they will not be commenting further on the situation at this time.
