Rugged Ex-Oiler Doesn't Make New Team
EDMONTON -- It's a waivers buffet these days.
The Edmonton Oilers, like every other team, are sending prospects to play elsewhere if they deem them unfit for the NHL. Part of this includes releasing players from PTOs.
The last player the Oilers released from a PTO was Mike Hoffman, with Travis Dermott still gunning for a spot on the team's blueline. Another familiar player to Oilers fans is not as lucky.

Alex Chiasson was invited to the Detroit Red Wings training camp on a PTO. The veteran winger hasn't played in a year, last playing for the aforementioned Red Wings in the 2022-23 season.

Earlier today, the Red Wings announced that they have released Chiasson from his PTO. Unfortunately, the 34-year-old winger must find a new team to continue his playing career.
Chiasson played in three pre-season games. He failed to collect a single point while playing 13:09 a night.
During his last NHL stint, he played 20 games for the Red Wings and scored nine points, six of which were goals. Chiasson has always been a good net-front option on the powerplay, and he proved that by earning 2:39 a game on the man advantage.
Chiasson was always a goal scorer. Of his 234 career points, 120 were goals. The most he ever had in one season came in 2018-19 when he scored 22 goals in his first year with the Oilers.
It's rare for someone to earn a PTO with another club this late in pre-season, especially after being cut from a separate team. If Chiasson wants to continue his playing career, he may need to play across the pond in a European league.
