Former Red Owen Hargreaves, like all Manchester United supporters, was left with more questions than answers after the side’s 3-2 defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday night.

While the media is likely to spin a certain narrative, it’s safe to say that Ruben Amorim will retain the backing of the fans for the foreseeable future. He’s navigating a squad largely made up of Erik ten Hag’s signings, and there’s undoubtedly some in there that he’d have vetoed if given the chance.

It’s also far from an instantaneous fix, as each manager post-Sir Alex Ferguson has quickly learned when taking to the dugout each week.

Even Ten Hag’s two trophies didn’t make up for the fact that United were nowhere near the level they needed to be in the Premier League – only under Jose Mourinho in 2017/2018 or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2020/2021 could fans believe for even a brief period that the club may just claim that elusive 21st title before they ultimately fell to a second-placed finish behind Manchester City on both occasions.

Now, United will enter Sunday’s Manchester derby in eighth place, eight points behind their cross-city rivals in fourth. The weekend’s result, which saw Forest claim their first Old Trafford win in 30 years, marked a sixth league loss of the term; the side have won only five matches while drawing four.

Post-match, Hargreaves analysed the team that Amorim had deployed and insisted there was only one player in the current crop deserving of a starting role week in and week out.

“You couldn’t pick their best team right now. It changes all the time. Ruben Amorim doesn’t have a settled back three – it changes every game. His ideal back three, in my opinion, is [Noussair] Mazraoui – [Leny] Yoro – [Lisandro] Martinez,” Hargreaves explained.

“The midfield changes every time. [Kobbie] Mainoo did well today. [Marcus] Rashford, I think, is only a squad option right now. Man United have only one undroppable, and that is Amad [Diallo].”
