Ruben Amorim not a fan of Andre Onana, planning to axe him once he comes onboard
Manchester United’s poor start to the season meant INEOS had no choice but to remove Erik ten Hag with Ruud van Nistelrooy taking temporary charge of the club.
Apart from on-field results, the Dutchman’s puzzling selection calls and his transfer preferences ultimately backfired and led to the club’s decision.
Ten Hag’s strategy of signing Eredivisie stars and former proteges did not work with incoming manager Ruben Amorim expected to get rid of plenty of his signings.
However, one signing that did bear fruit in the end was that of Andre Onana with the Cameroonian’s ability to play out from the back a huge upgrade on previous incumbent David de Gea’s struggles.
Onana’s future
The former Inter Milan star did struggled initially but has been one of the rare shining lights in what has otherwise been a pretty disappointing campaign thus far.
Before the PAOK game, the 28-year-old was asked about the new manager and he mentioned that he was excited to work with him and felt the United players had the ability to adjust to his tactics.
It was felt that with the Sporting Lisbon boss’ preference for playing out from the back, the Cameroon international would be one of the mainstays under him.
However, as relayed by F365, Amorim does not seem to be a fan of the former Ajax star and is planning on axing him once he arrives in Manchester.
Amorim wants the defence to stop leaking goals and he is not convinced with the United No 1’s shot-stopping abilities. There have been instanced where his technique has come under the scanner and for the new manager, that will not be tolerated.
Amorim not a fan
Plenty of English teams as well as clubs from Spain and Italy are expected to bid should the Red Devils make their goalie available for transfer.
“With a defense that needs to improve in many ways, Amorim knows that goalkeeping is a key piece, and is currently not convinced that Onana is the solution.
“André Onana’s future now seems to be in doubt. With Amorim taking over, the possibility of an exit for the Cameroonian goalkeeper is becoming an increasingly likely option.
“There are rumors that several clubs in the Premier League and other European leagues, including teams from La Liga and Serie A , could be interested in signing the goalkeeper.
Onana out?
“Onana will have to make a decision soon, since with the arrival of Amorim at Old Trafford , his stay at Manchester United seems increasingly distant.”
While there certainly are deficiencies in Onana’s game, especially when it comes to his technique and positioning while saving shots, there are far bigger things to worry about for Amorim.
United have been unable to find the back of the net regularly, and are without a specialist left-back since the start of the season. Even their midfield and defence is in dire need of a revamp.
Goalkeeping seems to be the least of his concerns, but this report states otherwise. For now, this report needs to be taken with a pinch of salt but it will be interesting to keep an eye out for any development regarding Onana’s future.
