Yahoo Sports Rory McIlroy hits his dad with errant shot at Masters
AUGUSTA, Ga. — Rory McIlroy has not gotten off to a good start in his quest to complete the career Grand Slam.
Still looking for his first Masters victory, to go along with wins at the PGA (twice), U.S. Open and British Open, McIlroy made six bogies at Augusta National en route to a first round of 4-over. One of those bogies came on the par-4 seventh hole, when he sprayed his second shot right of the green.
"Fore right!" he yelled.
A "fan" standing next to the green apparently didn't hear him or wasn't able to move out of the way quick enough.
The "fan" turned out to be not just anyone. It's Rory's father, Gerry McIlroy.
That's right: of all the people, Rory plunked his own dad.
“I should ask for an autographed glove,” the elder McIlroy joked, according to The Telegraph.
"I think he just needs to go and put some ice on," Rory McIlroy said after his round. "Maybe I'll autograph a bag of frozen peas for him."
For Rory McIlroy, it's a dubious start to a tournament that has not been kind to him. He has six top-10s in his 12 previous appearances at Augusta, but it is the 2011 Masters that he cannot escape. He entered the final round with a 4-stroke lead only to choke it away with a final-round 80 that included a triple bogey at the 10th.
Thursday, he added another infamous shot to his Masters résumé, one that his father likely won't forget.
